Many less educated and less experienced turfgrass managers will rely heavily upon fungicides to keep the grass looking and feeling great. It is tempting to go this route because the immediate effects can often be visually impressive. The grass greens up significantly and everything appears to be near perfection, at least until the fungicide wears off.
So why not just include fungicides as a normal part of a service program? Because the long term side effects are far worse than the short term benefits. The three main side effects are listed here. Click on any of them if you would like to learn about it in greater detail.
Resistance: The disease seems to be controlled by the fungicide, but eventually becomes resistant to it. New fungicides applications are then futile, and your lawn suffers.
Resurgence: What started as a minor case of Red Thread develops into a mutant problem that hits your lawn harder and more severely each time the fungicide wears off.
Non-Target Enhancement: You spray a fungicide to get Dollar Spot under control, only to have the lawn suffer horribly from Summer Patch as a result.
